Put Cheval Blanc Randheli and Soneva Jani side by side and there is very little to separate them on the usual measures of luxury.

Both have exceptional villas. Both have extraordinary settings. Both sit comfortably among the finest Maldives luxury resorts. And both are preferred partners of All 4 Season.
But we would rarely recommend them to the same client for the same reasons.
That is the more interesting comparison.
When a client asks us, “Which one is better?”, our answer usually starts with another question:
Who is travelling, and what matters most to them?
Because choosing at this level is not really about deciding which is the best luxury resort in Maldives based on room size, photographs, water slides or restaurant count.
It is about how the holiday will actually be lived.
Are there two energetic children who will need more than a beach and a pool after the first few days? Is this an anniversary or honeymoon where dinner is an important part of every evening? Is the family vegetarian? Jain? Do they enjoy international food or will they want familiar Indian meals during a week-long stay? Will they spend half their day inside the villa? Do they like luxury to feel barefoot and unstructured, or discreet and precise?
Once we know that, Cheval Blanc Randheli and Soneva Jani stop looking quite so similar.
And the answer becomes much easier.
For Families With Children, Soneva Jani Is Hard to Beat
One of the strongest reasons for us to recommend Soneva Jani for families is The Den.
This is not a kids’ club that children visit for an hour because their parents want some time by the pool.
It is a destination in itself.
At more than 1,500 square metres, Soneva describes The Den as the largest kids’ club in the Maldives. Its programme is designed for children and teenagers from four to 17, with pools and slides, creative activities, cooking, marine experiences and plenty of opportunities to explore outdoors. Babysitting can also be arranged for younger children, subject to the resort’s current policy.
The list of activities is impressive.
Children want something to look forward to. Something that belongs to them. Parents, equally, may want a few hours when they do not have to decide what everybody is doing next.
That is when a genuinely good children’s programme stops being an amenity and starts changing the holiday.
Children get their own holiday. Parents get theirs.
They separate for a few hours, do completely different things and come back to the villa with their own stories.
Soneva Jani understands this particularly well.
The famous villa slides will probably win the children’s vote before the family has even booked. But for us, the slides are not the real reason to choose Soneva.
The depth of the children’s experience is.
There is also something about Soneva’s overall personality that makes sense for families. It is barefoot, imaginative and relaxed without feeling ordinary. There is freedom to the way a day unfolds. Children do not feel as though they are constantly being asked to behave as adults on holiday.
That is one of the reasons Soneva Jani belongs naturally in conversations about the best Maldives resorts for families. But that label alone still does not tell us whether it is right for a particular family.
For a family with active younger children or teenagers who enjoy independence, activities and discovery, Soneva Jani would usually be our first choice between the two.
Where Cheval Blanc Has the Edge: The Dining Experience
This is one area where our feedback on Cheval Blanc Randheli dining has consistently been very strong.
Clients remember the food.
That tells us considerably more than the fact that the resort has five restaurants.
What separates the experience is not how many places there are to eat. It is how distinctly each meal can feel and the level at which those experiences are executed.
Le 1947 is the Maison’s signature gastronomic restaurant, built around an elaborate French dégustation experience with Maldivian influence.
For a serious food lover, it can become one of the evenings around which the holiday is remembered.
But there is another reason we like the way Cheval Blanc handles dining.
Not every meal on a Maldives holiday needs to be a gastronomic event.
On a five- or seven-night stay, you also need somewhere you genuinely want to return to.
Deelani, set over the lagoon, brings Italian and Mediterranean flavours and is the sort of restaurant that works naturally for longer stays and mixed family groups.
Diptyque takes the experience towards Japanese and East Asian cuisine, while The White offers a more relaxed all-day setting. La Table de Partage brings a more private, personalised dining experience, with menus that can be shaped around the guests with advance notice.
There is variety, certainly.
But more importantly, there is a sense that eating here is part of the holiday rather than something fitted around it.
That distinction matters because travellers experience food very differently.
For one client, dinner is dinner.
For another, choosing where to eat that evening, spending two hours over a meal and remembering a dish six months later is part of why they travel.
For the second client, our recommendation changes.
Dining at Cheval Blanc feels considered, polished and restaurant-led rather than simply being a collection of resort outlets.
So if food sits near the top of the holiday brief, Cheval Blanc Randheli has the edge for us.
Vegetarian, Indian and Jain Food: The Detail That Matters
For our clients, this can be more important than a long list of restaurant names.
And “Are you vegetarian?” is not enough information for us.
Two vegetarian families can have completely different expectations from the same Maldives resort.
One family may happily spend a week exploring Mediterranean, Japanese, Asian and plant-led cooking.
Another may enjoy all of that for two days and then want dal, rice, rotis and familiar Indian flavours.
A Jain family brings another set of requirements altogether.
Children may have their own preferences. One parent may be vegan. Someone may be adventurous with food; someone else may not be.
This is also why conversations about Maldives resorts for Indian families need to go beyond whether a hotel simply has vegetarian dishes on a menu.
So the conversation we would have before choosing is not simply:
“Are you vegetarian?”
We would ask:
How important is Indian or Jain food during the holiday? Do you enjoy international vegetarian cuisine? Are there children with particular preferences? How adventurous are you with food?
The answers can influence which resort we recommend.
Both Cheval Blanc and Soneva Jani can work extremely well for vegetarian travellers.
At Cheval Blanc, the breadth of cuisines means a vegetarian guest does not need to spend the week eating within one culinary style.
Soneva approaches food differently. Plant-forward, produce-led cooking feels naturally connected to its larger barefoot philosophy, and there is an exploratory quality to the experience.
The difference is more about personality than capability.
Soneva’s food feels organic, exploratory and connected to the resort’s way of life.
Cheval Blanc feels more classically gastronomic, polished and restaurant-led.
A vegetarian family could be extremely happy at either.
But for Indian vegetarian, Jain, vegan or particularly specific requirements, we would never leave the conversation until check-in.
We prefer the resort to understand the family before the family arrives.
And we would not publish a permanent list of “must-order vegetarian dishes” either.
Menus change. Ingredients change. Seasonal preparations change.
We would rather speak to the culinary team before a client’s stay and understand what they are doing particularly well at that time.
That small amount of preparation can make a considerable difference during a five- or seven-night stay.
The Villas: Two Very Different Ideas of Luxury
The villas are where photographs can be most misleading.
Not because the photographs are inaccurate.
Because they cannot show you how you will actually use the space.
Soneva Jani is about space, freedom and a certain sense of fantasy.
Its villas are enormous. For many families, the villa itself becomes part of the holiday.
You are not simply returning there to sleep.
There are afternoons when nobody particularly wants to leave. Children are in the pool. Someone is reading outside. Lunch stretches longer than planned. Nobody is checking what activity comes next.
For the right family, this is precisely the point.
They want the villa to feel like their own world for a week.
Cheval Blanc Randheli feels more composed.
The design is sophisticated and restrained, and the overall experience feels quieter and more discreet. There is less emphasis on playful spectacle and more on refinement, privacy and detail.
The difference is easy to describe but important not to judge.
Both are luxurious. They simply express luxury differently.
Soneva Jani feels expansive and playful.
Cheval Blanc Randheli feels intimate and polished.
Some people know immediately which description sounds more like them.
Others only realise after we start asking how they actually spend their holidays.
Service and Atmosphere May Actually Decide It
For some of our UHNI clients, this matters more than the size of the villa or even the restaurants.
Soneva’s style of luxury is deliberately relaxed.
You are encouraged to take your shoes off, slow down and disconnect. Sustainability does not feel like something added on for marketing; it is part of how the resort operates and how the holiday feels.
Some travellers settle into that immediately.
The first day their shoes disappear, their schedule often follows.
Breakfast becomes later. The children disappear to do something interesting. Nobody particularly cares whether lunch happens at one or three.
That freedom is part of Soneva’s luxury.
Cheval Blanc delivers a different kind of experience.
It is discreet, precise and highly personalised.
The luxury is quieter.
There is a sense of polish without needing to constantly remind you that you are staying somewhere exceptional.
Things feel considered. Service is present without becoming intrusive. The atmosphere is elegant without needing to turn every moment into an occasion.
For some clients, that precision is what allows them to switch off.
This is why understanding the client is so important.
Some of our clients feel completely at home with Soneva’s barefoot approach.
Others naturally prefer the more composed world of Cheval Blanc.
Neither preference is more sophisticated than the other.
Luxury works best when you do not have to adapt yourself to enjoy it.
The resort should already feel like you.
What If This Is a Honeymoon or Anniversary?
The Maldives will always be closely associated with honeymoons, and both resorts can sit comfortably among the world’s luxury honeymoon resorts in the Maldives.
But even here, we would not choose simply because the trip is labelled a honeymoon.
Some couples want barefoot days, enormous villas, privacy and very little structure. For them, Soneva Jani may be exactly right.
Others imagine long dinners, highly intuitive service, a quieter atmosphere and evenings that feel more dressed-up without ever becoming formal. For them, Cheval Blanc may feel more natural.
An anniversary can be different again.
The question is not only, “Is this a romantic trip?”
It is:
What does romance look like to the two people actually travelling?
That distinction tells us considerably more.
So, Which Would We Actually Choose?
There is no points table.
But there are situations where we know where we would start.
A family with active younger children or teenagers?
Soneva Jani.
A couple travelling for an anniversary or special occasion, where dining, privacy and polished service matter enormously?
Cheval Blanc Randheli.
Serious food lovers?
Cheval Blanc Randheli.
A family that wants the villa itself to become a major part of the holiday?
Soneva Jani.
Travellers who love barefoot luxury, sustainability and a sense of discovery?
Soneva Jani.
Travellers who value discretion, precision and understated elegance?
Cheval Blanc Randheli.
A vegetarian family?
That answer needs another conversation.
We would first want to understand whether Indian or Jain food matters, whether the family enjoys international vegetarian cooking, what the children eat and how important food is to the overall holiday.
There will always be exceptions.
A couple can absolutely love Soneva Jani.
A family can absolutely prefer Cheval Blanc Randheli.
That is why we would never choose from a checklist alone.
The A4S View
Here is the comparison that matters to us.
A family travels to the Maldives with two energetic children.
At Soneva Jani, the children have their own programme and their own discoveries. The villa becomes part of family life. Everyone settles into the barefoot rhythm of the island.
They return saying it was one of their best holidays.
Two years later, the same parents want to go back to the Maldives.
This time, it is their anniversary.
No children.
They want privacy. Long dinners. Beautiful food. Service that appears exactly when it should and disappears when it should not.
This time, we may choose Cheval Blanc Randheli.
The clients have not changed.
The trip has.
And that is precisely why we do not believe there is one “best resort in the Maldives”.
There is a best resort for the trip you are taking now.
Both Cheval Blanc Randheli and Soneva Jani are preferred partners of All 4 Season.
That gives us access to two exceptional resorts.
But access is not the real value of the recommendation.
Knowing when to choose which one is.
Our role is not simply to book whichever resort a client has shortlisted.
Before we decide, we want to understand who is travelling. The children’s ages. Why they are going. How they eat. What they do on holiday. How much privacy they want. Whether they want their villa to be the centre of the trip or simply a beautiful place to return to. Whether their idea of switching off means taking their shoes off or having every detail quietly taken care of.
Once we understand that, we can be much more definite.
Sometimes the answer is Soneva Jani.
Sometimes it is Cheval Blanc Randheli.
And for the same traveller on another trip, the answer may be completely different.
That is not indecision.
That is the difference between choosing a great hotel and choosing the right one.
For over three decades, All 4 Season has planned journeys around the traveller, not just the destination. From the best luxury resorts in the Maldives and luxury honeymoon resorts in the Maldives to carefully chosen Maldives resorts for families and Indian travellers, our recommendations begin with understanding how our clients actually like to travel.
When two exceptional resorts such as Cheval Blanc Randheli and Soneva Jani are being compared, we look beyond facilities to understand which one is right for the trip being taken.
If you are deciding between Cheval Blanc Randheli vs Soneva Jani, tell us your dates, who is travelling, the children’s ages if applicable, the occasion, your food requirements and what matters most to you.
We will tell you which one we would choose for your trip — and why.
